The Goddess of night, with her armful of stars which she is scattering through the deep and dark firmament is depicted here as a most Beautiful woman. Mythology explains that she is the daughter of Chaos, from which the world has made, and the mother of Day. Her residence was in Hades, but in the picture she has emerged into the misty atmosphere, her long beautiful hair blowing in the wind.

Bernhard Zickendraht. was born 1854 in Hersfeld. A Christian Friedrich Z. was town major during the occupation by the troops of Napoleon. Bernhard studied in Kassel, Berlin and Paris and became a very famous portrait-painter in Berlin. He died 1937 in Charlottenburg, a noble part of Berlin. Prior to this, he painted crown prince Wilhelm, the eldest son of former emperor Wilhelm II (this picture is Cecilienhof/Potsdam near Berlin). In 1922 he painted the famous movie star Pola Negri, who went to Hollywood one year later with the film-director Lubitsch.
